Wow... has been a real long time since I was on dA. Been busy with lot of stuff. Got my Masters degree in Physics and have joined U Chicago for a Ph.D. So basically I have moved to the other side of the world.

As a result I have been not photographing for a while. But I plan to get back to it soon now. Will be trying to do film photography and want to gets my hands on a rangefinder that I can afford. Anybody know where I can get one; or anyone who is selling their old one?

My sub has expired. Thanks to :iconheidi: for one moth of premium experience :D Contrary to my plans, I did only 2 features :( I was too busy the last 2 weeks of January taking photos at our colleges fests. Check out the photos from a music show by an Indian band Kailasa and a play called Dance like a Man. Comments and critiques are most appreciated.

It was a good month at dA. I like the photos I took and also got a DD. But it has been a not good month in other respects, and now I don't feel good enough to attempt any art. I have photos to edit, drawing to complete. :( Hopefully this will pass over.

Thanks for all the support at dA.

I haz DD

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 21, 2010, 7:51 AM

:iconyaysupplz: I haz DD now...

My abstract shot [link] got a DD.

Thanks to :iconlight-photography: for suggesting and to :iconopioid: for featuring it.

Also to :iconaobaob: whose work in architectural abstraction has inspired me a lot, and to :iconabstract--reality: a great group for abstracts and surreals.

And to :iconshadow-sapphire: for introducing me to dA. It has really pushed my photography beyond what I expected to go.

And lastly :ahoy: to the wonderful special girl who took me to the mall where this picture was shot.

I have a busy photographic weekend ahead, but I will get to your thank-you notes soon :aww:

So I have developed a liking for the Photo-journalistic (PJ) style. It was a natural development after street photography.

I have been doing a series of essentially  PJ style photos of the common people here in IIT Kharagpur. You can see it here People of KGP

I also took photos at WTMS (Western Technology Music Society) production 2009 at IIT Kharagpur... They are the local rock band composed of essentially engineering students at IIT Kharagpur. The series is here WTMS09. Photographing the event was really exciting. There are so many things happening almost simultaneously, it was like street photography on crack. I was running around for about 2-3 hrs and was dead tired in the end :faint:

I would like some critique and comments on both the series... If anyone can spare sometime for this, it would be wonderful :D

I will be heading home to Mumbai soon :) How about a Mumbai dev-meet? :eager:

So,  have been unable to find a development tank for film in this small town... My friend is going to Kolkata (Calcutta) tomorrow, and hopefully he should find one...

Meanwhile, I am back to using digital for the moment. I have been attempting a series of portraits of common people here in IIT Kharagpur. You can see them here People of KGP.

I am new to portraits, so any tips/comments/critique that you can spare will be great... :)

I do not have any photos to post for some days. I am taking pictures but with a film camera, and until I develop the 2 rolls that I have finished, I can't post anything much.

Photographing with film is such a unique experience... I found myself thinking more about the shots that just hastily clicking... I took some shots around Kharagpur, and one roll for Calcutta...

Street is extremely difficult. I don't even know if I was pointing in the right direction... :O_o:

Meanwhile here is a photo of my camera: Minolta Hi-matic S2:camera:

I am back at my Institute in Kharagpur i.e. KGP near Calcutta, India. I am having a hard time composing street shots here. I don't really know why but the surroundings seem quite boring and there are so many people that photos invariably turn out to be shots of a crowd rather than a composed street photo... I guess it will a challenge to do good street here...

I also got an old film camera from home. Nothing fancy, a Minolta Hi-Matic S2 with a 38mm lens... haven't field tested it yet, but planning to try some film development with caffenol. I still haven't found an effective home-remedy for developing photopaper yet though... Hope it works through, sounds a lot of fun... any useful tips I can have? :)

So, I went to Berlin today with the noble aim of getting some street photography done in one of my favourite cities. I planned to walk all the way from Zoologisher Garten to Berlin Hauptbahnhof, stop at interesting spots and shoot.

But, less than quarter of the way there, by batteries drained out. No worries I was prepared and triumphantly I pulled out my spare batteries. But, they too freaking died after 10 shots :tears:

So I walked through such interesting places and only imagined taking all the wonderful shots that came across my way... I am so ashamed of myself...

All who read this are invited to abuse me as much as they would want or can... I must learn a good lesson here...
For those who feel a bit awkward abusing me, I have already taken the first step; see this deviation with my own picture [link]

Hi

I crossed 4.5k page views

I am thinking of doing a series on the Italian cities I have been to. Like some street photos of each city and some showing the city itself...

I also put some of my deviations from the abstract and nature gallery up for prints. I cannot put up street photos as I donot have permission from the subjects.  Please buy my prints people... :buymyprints:

So, I have been trying Street Photography for a while now... but I am not really very happy with how I am doing ... :(

It seems to me that all my photos generally have people standing/sitting at various places. Somehow a certain action or emotion seems to be missing in most of them, though few have turned out to be good.

Can any street photographer give me some tips or trade secrets ( ;) ) to become better?

Also, I would like comments/critiques on my street photos [link] ... since I do not have a subscription feel free to write critiques in the comment boxes... Also pardon the fact that the early photos in the album are not really street ...

Update on Sunday: So had a decent meeting in Berlin... along with some of the foulest cheese I have ever laid on my tongue :puke:. They took us around Berlin in a bus, which is not as fun as on foot. I wanted to go around myself but got bored alone and so came back :( . But the day is still left so maybe ...:P

It seems that German privacy laws do not allow photos to be used without the subject consent. This practically makes street photography illegal in Germany: :shakefist: What the hell!!!!!

I have to remove my recent street photos then? :( If someone knows any detail or knows someone who knows ( :P )about this please comment... I really want to do street in Germany...

PS: Had a superb trip to Rostock and Warnemunde... will put up photos if legal :|

Edit

It seems this post can be read as if I am sure it is illegal. But actually I am not sure whether it is and just want someone experienced to clarify the issue...
