a young boy carrying a bundle of dry sticks on his head. They collect these from the trees in my Institute and use it as fuel. I am guessing they are too poor to be able to afford school and so they work to help support their families.

Either way he and another boy were having fun and also smiled for the camera.

This photograph was taken in India, but it could as well be anywhere else.
The “stick boy” represents many boys around the world in his same situation: going through inconceivable hardship, not even being able to attend school and have a normal life. Like so many other children, this boy’s childhood has been taken away from him by poverty.
And even so, he smiles. Not just a tug on the lips, but a shy, heart-warming smile that reaches his entire face and steals the watcher’s eye.
A deeply expressive image, I love looking at it. The photographer really knows what he’s doing!
